Recognition at Global Health Symposium in Japan

Addis Health Entrepreneurs continues to gain international recognition for its work in advancing equitable healthcare in Ethiopia. In November 2024, the organization was invited to participate in the 8th Global Symposium on Health Systems Research, held in Nagasaki, Japan. The event brought together global leaders, researchers, and innovators working to strengthen health systems around the world.

During the symposium, Addis Health was awarded the Gwatkin Equity Catalyst Award by Metrics for Management. This award recognizes innovative approaches that use data and metrics to improve equity in healthcare. Addis Health was selected for its practical and scalable model aimed at addressing Ethiopia’s growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Ethiopia’s healthcare system is under increasing pressure from a dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases. At the same time, limited resources and gaps in access to preventive care continue to affect the most vulnerable populations. Addis Health’s approach focuses on closing these gaps through targeted, data-driven solutions.

A key part of this strategy is the planned use of the EquityTool, a simple and effective method for measuring relative wealth. This tool will enable Addis Health to better identify underserved populations and ensure that healthcare services are delivered to those who need them most. By using clear data to guide decision-making, the organization aims to improve both efficiency and impact.

Addis Health also leverages technology to strengthen service delivery. Its model includes a centralized digital health database to manage patient information and support continuity of care. In addition, call centers have been established to reach individuals with limited internet access, ensuring that services remain inclusive across different socioeconomic groups.

This recognition highlights Addis Health’s commitment to building a healthcare system that is both accessible and equitable. By combining strong data systems with practical service delivery, the organization is setting a clear example of how innovation can be applied in low-resource settings.

As Addis Health continues to grow, this milestone reinforces its role as a forward-looking healthcare provider focused on real impact. The organization remains committed to improving health outcomes, strengthening systems, and ensuring that no one is left behind.
